Audience
Lists and segments
Lists are groups you add people to. Segments are rules that update themselves. When to use each, and how to build them.
In this guide 4 sections
Both are audiences for a Broadcast or a Journey trigger.
| List | Segment | |
|---|---|---|
| Membership | You add and remove people | A rule decides, always up to date |
| Use for | Event attendees, beta testers, imports | Pro customers, inactive for 90 days |
Every product starts with a Test list that holds only you. Use it to try Broadcasts and Journeys.
Lists
- Open Audience › Lists and choose Create list. Give it a name and description.
- Open the list and choose Add contacts, or pick the list during an import or on a signup form.
Delete list also deletes its contacts, except those in another list. The confirmation shows the counts first.
Segments
- Open Audience › Segments and choose Create segment.
- Optionally filter by contact state.
- Under Who, add up to 20 conditions and choose whether people must match all or any.
- Save. The detail page shows the count and a sample.
Conditions depend on the field type:
- Text: is, is not, contains, has a value, is empty
- Number: is, is not, is more than, at least, less than, at most
- Date: is after, is before, is in the last N days
- Choice: is, is not, is any of
- Several choices: includes, is any of
Unfinished conditions are dropped when you save. Delete segment keeps the contacts.
Who actually receives
Unsubscribed, bounced, complained, and suppressed contacts are left out automatically, even if they’re in the list or match the segment. The audience step shows how many were left out.
Try it with your AI
Create a segment of subscribed contacts on the Pro plan who signed up in the last 30 days, and tell me how many it matches.
